For those who follow the D-League the last week has been exciting as a tremendous amount of talent has suddenly been infused into the league between NBA veterans entering the player pool and assignments coming down the tubes from parent clubs. Unlike most teams however, the Wizards have been moving in a somewhat backwards direction. They've yet to receive any assignment players from the Golden State Warriors - not that there's anything wrong with that - and the team recently learned that one of their top scoring options in Anthony Goods was leaving for a pro contract in Italy. It's no secret, Dakota - now at nine players on the roster - is in need of another backcourt weapon.
Scott Schroeder of Ridiculous Upside has reported in the last 48 hours that both Willie Warren and Luther Head have entered their names in the available player pool among a litany of other names to appear recently. While I'm only speculating, both would seem to be tempting options for the Wizards to add to their roster, as both players are young and have NBA experience.
Warren may be of the most interest to Golden State - who will be making the final decision on any player acquisitions - as he's just 22-years-old and one year removed from being selected in the second round by the Los Angeles Clippers. He saw limited time as a rookie, but did manage to produce some pretty strong numbers during a stint with the Bakersfield Jam. While he's been somewhat unimpressive overall as a professional to this point - a continuation of a down year as a sophomore at Oklahoma - let's not forget that Warren is just a few years removed from being a McDonald's All-American and one of the more highly sought after high school guards in the country before joining the Sooners. Then there's the more experienced, but still relatively young Head, who has played with Houston, Miami, Indiana and most recently the Sacramento Kings last season. The 29-year-old was part of the 2005 Draft Class, after finishing up his career at Illinois and while it's possible his stay in the D-League could be short lived, he would certainly be a welcome addition to the Wizards rotation.
Clearly, both of these moves are being dictated by the quickly approaching D-League Showcase in Reno in which all 30 NBA teams will be represented. Warren, Head and the other former NBA players to recently join the D-League are of course hoping to play well in Reno, impress an NBA team, and return to The Show. For the time being though, both would be solid stop gaps for the Wizards until they can find perhaps a more permanent replacement for Goods either in house, or from an outside source.
